Ok, that produces some meaningful data, I don't know how Mozilla Compose
will mangle it but :

ntpq> host 127.0.0.1
current host set to 127.0.0.1

Got packet, size = 32
Packet okay
***Can't find host localhost

This seems to indicate that "localhost" is missing from your /etc/hosts
file. Check that and try the normal "ntpq -p".

cat /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain loacalhost box1
10.1.1.2 box2 box2
10.1.1.3 box3 box3
10.1.1.4 box4 box4
10.1.1.1 box1 127.0.0.1
192.168.1.226 box1 127.0.0.1

192.168.1.226 is the "wireless" ethernet bridge I use to access the router downstairs.
