The reason that you got the above result seems to be that it appears as if you attempted to invoke the .wav file as a program, it is not, it needs to be invokes as an argument to the 'play' command.

Here is what I get invoking it:

$ play /usr/share/system-config-soundcard/sound-sample.wav

Input Filename : /usr/share/system-config-soundcard/sound-sample.wav
Sample Size    : 16-bits
Sample Encoding: signed (2's complement)
Channels       : 2
Sample Rate    : 44100

Time: 00:06.92 [00:00.00] of 00:06.91 ( 100.1%) Output Buffer: 305.15K

Done.
