Why not make it easy on yourself...

If you look in /etc/bashrc you can see how the bash prompt is formed
starting at line 15.  You can modify your .bashrc based on that to get
whatever you need/like.

I've got some hideously long directory names so I just simply add:

PS1="[\u@\h ]\\$ "
