The rules get even more interesting if you are running cables

on where you are, it may not be legal to run the cables yourself.

Basic rule is to check the local building codes. In some places it is
even illegal to run the cables in your own home between floors due to
fire regs. All holes between floors have to be sealed with fire rated
sealants or use fire rated conduit that is sealed.

It is not that it is illegal to run cables between floors, but that
you have to fire-chalk after you do. It can make running cables
after the house is built interesting...

Fire-chalk, that is the stuff I was trying to think of.

Now, if they really wanted to reduce the risk of spreading the fire,
they would outlaw using MN cable. (Romex) It is way to easy to
damage, and then you get a fire hazard, a shock hazard, or both...
