Okay, I've been through this before with FC4. I just upgraded a system from Fc2 to FC5 and the upgrade went just fine until I rebooted. Now, I'm getting the dreaded

Kernel panic - attempt to kill init

message on boot. There's also a bizarre message saying there was no disk in /dev/hdd? What's the deal here?

How many hard drives do you have? IDE/SATA/SCSI? While in grub hit c to go to a prompt, and enter the command geometry (hd0) or substitute whatever hd the boot command is using, to find out more about what it's thinking.
