Since today my desktop remains empty. The top and bottom Gnome bars are

Any ideas?

Albert,
I've had similar issues which were caused by Nautilus hanging, usually
issuing a quick 'pkill nautilus' will cause it to restart, and
everything goes back to normal.
I know this isn't a "fix", but it might get round the problem until
someone has one ;-)

i agree. nautilus hangs in fc4 regularly especially when using right clicks. i use ~#] killall nautilus
 and everything pops back up.
