Laptop dual head problems

I'm having some trouble getting dual heads working properly on my laptop.

I have an HP dv4000 with an i915 chip set.

I've got dual head sort of working, but it's certainly not working the way I want, and I think I need a second
pair of eyes to help me see what's wrong.

The laptop display is fine, and works just as expected.  But I've got two problems with the external monitor.

1. The external monitor is mirroring the laptop display, which I don't want, I want it to be placed "LeftOf" my laptop display.

2. The display on the external monitor vibrates, as though the entire desktop shifts left and right 2 or 3 pixels, making the display very blurry and virtually unreadable.

Does any see what I'm missing?

Thanks!

Rod
