I should have missed the history of the discussion. Will you please privately 
send me the whole discussion. It seems I can help you with the issue, as I 
have had the same problem some time ago (looks like). And if have not been 
mentioned, please include the model/vendor identities, as well as the output 
of the 
# smartctl -a /dev/hda

Also send the outputs of
# smartctl -t short /dev/hda
sleep ~120
# smartctl -t selftest /dev/hda

with the appropriate /dev/hd...

You don't have to rely upon smartmon. You can always use the
diagnostic provided by the manufacturer of your drive.  If you bought
an OEM drive go to the manufacturer's web site and download it.
Otherwise dig out that floppy or CDROM and run the test(s).
