Hi,
I cannot get sound from mplayer, sound in KDE,streaming audio (xmms), Sound card detection works but mplayer is mute with the error:-

Checking audio filter chain for 22050Hz/2ch/s16le 22050Hz/2ch/s16le...
AF_pre: 22050Hz/2ch/s16le
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
Audio: no sound

How do you 'open/initialize' a sound device.
The chip is an 'RealTek ALC655 (VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97'

Thanks david

Go to mplayer>preferences>audio - try alsa or oss
                 -- gary

gary,
I tried oss before and did not work, now this morning it is,
still no alsa which is the sound sys I wont working.

 thanks david

Make sure you have all necessary alsa packages - guessing the reboot,
and sound being reloaded helped. ?? You can also add "ao=alsa to your
mplayer.config. --gary

This is getting weird, after running a .wvm via mplayer theres no sound from oss, then the desktop freezes. I cannot run bash history with up/down keys and needs log out /log in to revive the desktop.
I think it's a udev problem not giving correct perms, this I know little off.

   Thanks david

Try a different kernel - I've gone back to 2.6.13-1.1532 --gary

Tried kernels back to 1369 and no alsa sound,it has to be perms somewhere,I mean 'oss' works why not alsa.
