yes, it was mounted first, and i did a test of a touch banana to make sure i could read/write/del from the drive.

did you fix the partition?

is it mounted ? You can't actually write a file to a filesystem that
isn't mounted (my mistake)...

mount /dev/sda1 /media/usbdrive
dd... of=/media/usbdrive/filename...
