If you are running FC4 it is most likely the rhn-applet.  Since there are
issues with rhn-applet and newer style yum repos [1], it doesn't realize
that you are running Fedora, so it falls back to trying to talk to RHN.

It would be rather simple to test by just exiting rhn-applet.  If you are
using FC4, it's not alerting you about updates anyway.
