I have the same problem with my IDE HP tape drive.  Though with an
older kernel.

I need some more information on this!

(1)  Motherboard type?
(2)  Tape drive model (HP Surestore, etc)?
(3)  Interface type?  IDE / SCSI
(4)  Module used in kernel (IDE-TAPE, IDE-SCSI, etc)?
(5)  What happens if you do "mt load" or "mt status" in the
/var/log/messages file.
(6)  Have you tried loading the module manually?

Sorry, we just need more information as to the problem.
What you have given us is not specific enough.
