That did the trick.  I deleted the GATEWAY= lines from both files, then
       /etc/init.d/network  restart
and the network worked as desired.

As another check, I rebooted the computer and the network still worked.

Note: I looked at the old FC3 scripts
   /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth?
and they both had the "bad" GATEWAY= lines, although there they did no
damage in FC3 (with my old kernel).  Perhaps I would not have had this
problem with a fresh FC4 installation, rather than an update from FC3.

Many thanks for your speedy and insightful help. I  could not have
figured this out on my own.
