Did you install it according to the instructions? Perhaps there's a
step that you missed?
When I installed it a while ago, I think I also had to install a basic
skin. I installed an older version though, and it may have installed
differently than it does, now.
I use the freshrpms set of mplayer and I don't have any problems. I
have a menu item for mplayer in my Applications>Sound and Video.
It works and I have not had any problems.

It could be an issue with the repo than FC4.
