[I was just passing the entry by,
on the grounds that only an idiot would give that title,
when I noticed the author was me!
I lost the title during cut-and-paste.]

Thanks for the other responses too.
I'm looking at cacti now.

I did see there was a Perl solution,
which is used in some of the rrd update scripts I've seen,
but I was looking for the function as used in bash scripts
(which of course I have now found).
