Many thanks. I did look at the ATI web site but didn't see any reference
to entering bugs into a bugzilla. There was some info there about other
problems (using linux) but nothing I could see that seemed to relevant
to my problem.

Yes, you may well be right. I think I ran the config program when I
started looking into the problem in order to see what it did say and if
it offered anything that may give me a hint to the problem.

I hope this solution does indeed help others with the problem, and that
it is the correct solution. As said, I am no X/graphics expert! :-)
