It would be helpful if you would provide us with the information what
soundcard exactly your notebook has and which sound configuration is
set, together with a list of loaded modules.

Output of following commands requested:

1) /sbin/lspci -v
2) cat /etc/modprobe.conf
3) /sbin/lsmod

Before replying you may be able to fix your sound problem yourself by
checking all settings in "alsamixer". Run that command in a terminal.
Watch out for "MM" (= muted) marked settings.
