Legacy megaraid broken again in FC3 2.6.12?

There's a long-standing problem, documented in bugs 135484 and 138590,
regarding failure of FC3 to support the legacy megaraid cards like my
PERC2/DC on install or update. There were workarounds for install (driver
disk) and for update (the old megaraid driver got built, but update put
the new megaraid_mbox driver in modprobe.conf and the initrd image, so you
could fix the conf file and mkinitrd again and boot the updated kernel).
The symptom on install was "no disks found", on update a kernel panic when
trying to boot the new kernel when it tries to find the volumes.

On July 15, Dave Jones at Redhat posted to bug 13584
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=135484) and several
other bugs that the update release kernel-2.6.12-1.1372_FC3 may contain a
fix to the problem, and requested that people update and report. Did
that.

The report is that not only does it not fix the broken initrd setup, it
appears to break the mkinitrd workaround. I get the kernel panic even
after fixing modprobe.conf and making a new initrd image. Any experience
or insight with this here on the list?
