To remove an rpm call it by it's name, not the file name:

rpm -e newlib-68hc1x

> # rpm -i newlib-68hc1x-1.12.0-3.0.1.i586.rpm

rpm -qa | grep newlib

will tell you how the above package is called (I am not sure whether
"68hc1x" is part of the name).
