Antonio is right,
  In GNOME at least, you go to 
Desktop -> Preferences -> More Preferences ->
Preferred Applicatons -> 

There are Web Browser -> Mail Reader -> Terminal

Select Mail Reader and select Kmail.  Simple as that. 
The process should also be there in KDE. Hope it
works!!
