OOo (rpm) vs. OOO (tgz)

I wonder where there is a discussion of the differences between OOo
installed from rpm (via YUM or from the original install) and OOo
downloaded from the OOo web site.

For example, iiimf doesn't seem to work with the OOo installed from
the downloaded tgz file. Iiimf works great with the rpm-based OOo
1.1.x or 2.0. I am running Fedora Core 4, fully YUM updated. Thanks
in advance.
