Add this to your /etc/sshd/sshd_config:

ClientAliveInterval n

n=number of seconds (0 default for unlimited)

I suspect, but haven't checked, that applies to all connexions and could terminate programs other than the shell through inactivity. Also, it measures inicativity differently from then shell - the former measures traffic, the latter commands.
