RHEL4 != FC4. Advice for RHEL4 may not apply to FC4.
You can verify the problems with up2date on FC4 by searching a list mirror:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=fedora-list&r=1&w=2
or use Google, but Google isn't as current:
<search terms> site:www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list
Searching the list archive does not work.
