Dear Colleen:

After you configure the xscreensaver to run in KDE (see instructions below), log out of KDE and log back in. You will now see a splash screen for XScreensaver. Click on Settings and inside uncheck this ugly splash screen so you won't have to see it every time you log into KDE.
