does the brand matter, or will anything that says "ethernet"
fit the bill?

What matters is the Ethernet chip on the card, not the logo printed on the box. I have used a SMC card with a Realtek 8139 chip without any problems, but that doesn't guarantee that SMC cards with other types of Ethernet chips would work.

Yeah, & Realtek chips are one's to avoid. If you ever decide to load FreeBSD, on a box with Realtek chips, on the Ethernet cards, you'll find out why Realquick ;-) 3com gets my vote :-)
