Be aware that not all files below /var/log/ are plain text files with
logging information. You faced that already with the statistics file.
The central log file is /var/log/messages. It is often useful to observe
it constantly by running in a terminal

tail -f /var/log/messages

While doing your dial-in you should see log messages scrolling in there.
