I reported the same problem to the list back in April, but never got
a fix. I believe I tried using the x86 version - I cant recall the
outcome and I dont have access to the x86_64 box at present.
I moaned that grub doesnt exist on the distribution/rescue CD.
I ended up using Knoppix
