  You most likely have intel centrino wireless - to confirm
  do this as root:

  lspci | grep -i network
 
  If you see something like Intel Corp. PRO/Wireless 2200BG
  then you do. You may see 2100 as well.

  If so then you most likely need the firmware which you can
  retrieve from either

   http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/firmware.php
  or
   http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/firmware.php

  Down load the firmware - unpack and put all the files
  in /lib/firmware

  After that you should be good to go.
