OT - Help with sendmail

Can anyone give me a simple example of using sendmail. I tried this:

sendmail user@xxxxxxxxxx < tst.dat

where user@xxxxxxxxxx is my valid email address and tst.dat is a text file I 
want to send. Sendmail just hangs....

Any Ideas?
