ok..

so you're saying i can/should use the 686... any idea why it uses the
586/686 numbering system...

The current kernel for FC3 is 2.6.11-1.14_FC3. The i686 version is
available at:

http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/3/i386/kerne
l-2.6.11-1.14_FC3.i686.rpm

I'd assume the i686 version would be fine; unless you have some ancient
box ...
