So what is the problem with adding modprobe sg to
the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file?

Nothing in particular. I was simply hoping there was a way to trigger automatic loading of sg device driver. On old monolitic /dev (pre-udev), /dev/sg* devices were precreated, so no special magic was needed to use them. Udev doesn't seem to be creating /dev/sg* devices unless sg driver is first loaded. However, since there are no nodes in /dev for it, applications can't trigger loading of it by accessing the device. Chicken and egg problem.
