I've found that ggv can do this very nicely, in fact its much more capable than even AR7 in the regard.
Unfortunately, ggv and gpdf still don't do smoothing like xpdf. If your fonts don't suck in ggv, then it will do the job just fine. Otherwise, you porbably need Acrobat Reader.
