ntpq stopped working

I never had this problem until a few days ago when ntpq quit working.:

           # ntpq -p
           Name or service not known


What service does it mean, "ntpq?"

I don't know what I did, if anything, to cause this?
I made no changes intended for ntp.

Any help appreciated.
