Plextor PX-716A DVD burner and xine

I have an FC3 system ASUS P5GD2 deluxe with a Plextor PX-716A DVD
burner.

When I try to play DVDs in this drive the frame rate is horrible. Jerky
playback, dropped frames.

I ran xine-check and I found that DMA does not appear to be set for this
DVD drive. I tried setting DMA on using

hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

But I get the following:

HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted

I checked the jumper settings on the drive and the bios settings and
best I can tell they should allow DMA to be setup.

The other odd thing I have noted is that when I insert a DVD or CD in
this drive I have to manually mount it to access it. I used this drive
to load the system from the FC3 CDs. I have used this drive to burn a
CD-RW with no problems.

Ultimately trying to get this drive to work with Mythtv.

Any ideas on this one?
