External SCSI DAT drive and FC3

I have been having trouble getting either GNOME or KDE to recognize my
Seagate/Archive Python 04106-XXX DDS3 DAT drive, which is in an external
enclosure.

The GNOME hardware browser finds the drive without problem at

/dev/st0

Also, the tar command accesses the drive without problem. But when I
want to use a GUI backup tool such as KDat or Yosemite Tapeware, no
drive found. All other hardware working fine; this is the only SCSI
device on the bus.

Any clues as to where I should start looking for a solution?

Thanks.
