Actually, you've got one of the best options for open source 3d support. You
could do a little better by going to an ATI FireGL 8800, which has a
slightly earlier but faster chipset. (I see 3 on ebay right now < $15.)

Anything else, and you're going to introduce a whole new set of hassles in
the form of binary-only (that is, unsupportable) drivers.
