David, while your point is valid, you forgot three important things:

  1. Tell the newbie that searching the archives is not only more
efficient but *also* quicker than waiting for someone to reply to your
message.

  2. Give him some advice or a solution to his present problem in
addition to reprimanding him on not using the archives. You were already
writing a message... what does one or two more lines cost you?

  3. Give him a clue as to the archives. Newbies often can't find them,
or don't know where they are. In some cases, they don't even know
archives *exist*. Point him to the URL for MARC's archive, to the Red
Hat archives, anything.

But for Pete's sake, say something constructive too. While the reprimand
was valid, it reflects badly on you that a reprimand was the *ONLY*
thing you had to contribute to the discussion.
