I can play KDE sounds, but kscd is silent reguardless of the kernel

If you can play KDE sounds, then your sound device is configured correctly.

I had the same problem here for a while. I found that I could play a cd using XMMS using digital playback instead of analog. Open the options -> preferences -> input plugins -> cd audio -> configure dialog in XMMS, and select digital extraction. Then select your cd device as the input source.

If it works, then it means that the audio cable from your cd to your sound card/device is incorrectly installed. Sorry I can't help you with this part.

You might try configuring kscd to use the digital cd connection, but when I tried it, it didn't work correctly.

John
