Yes, it is possible. Some month ago I did an FC1 to FC2 upgrade using
up2date. _But_: the more the install is customized, the more problems
during the upgrade process can be expected. Using the burned CDs and
running an upgrade with them is more safe, though difficulties can occur
too. No general guarantee can be given for either way of upgrading.
