I also have the tarball on site, but as it ddn't have any installation
instructions, I didn't know where to put it. It seemed happy enough
running right from the directory I unpacked it
in, /usr/src/thunderbird.

So I got the rpm above, nuked the unpack directory the tarball made
and installed the rpm & ran ldconfig, but it won't run, either from
an icon I made, or from the command line, returning to the cli prompt
in about 1/2 second with no reported errors. What gives?

The end of the strace shows this:
----------------
open("/root/.thunderbird/init.d/", O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_LARGEFILE|
O_DIRECTORY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
open("/usr/lib/thunderbird-1.0/init.d/", O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|
O_LARGEFILE|O_DIRECTORY) = 3
fstat64(3, {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=4096, ...}) = 0
fcntl64(3, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
getdents64(3, /* 3 entries */, 4096) = 80
getdents64(3, /* 0 entries */, 4096) = 0
close(3) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
stat64("/root/.thunderbird/init.d/K*", 0xbfffee70) = -1 ENOENT (No
such file or directory)
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, [CHLD], [], 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
stat64("/usr/lib/thunderbird-1.0/init.d/K*", 0xbfffee70) = -1 ENOENT
(No such file or directory)
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, [CHLD], [], 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0
exit_group(127) = ?
-------------------
So obviously the rpm didn't init the init.d directory properly.
Can the packager comment please?
