Cacti(monitoring ppp0) w/o SNMP

Is there anyone here that has experience in setting up cacti to poll a
local interface w/o going through SNMP? All I read about in cacti is
SNMP. I only want to it to poll and create a nice graph for local
interfaces

eg: eth0/eth1/ppp0

Is there a way to do this with cacti?

I know there's webminstats/MRTG(which I've already played with) but I'm
trying out new things.
