If they are just _opening_ slowly but running fine after that, it could
be that you have an unmounted file system in your path or open at a
shell.  For example, if you mounted a cdrom, cd'd to it and then
unmounted it from a different shell...you'd have the unmounted drive
still at your original shell.
This can cause a delay when starting programs.  Note that it could be an
NFS or SAMBA share, not just a cdrom.
