Now this is the strange part: When I turn arthur back on, I receive my missing log messages on buster. Clearly there is some sort of dependency on arthur that is in buster, but I can't figure out what it is. I'm guessing it is DNS related, but don't know enough to find it.

Even when my log messages don't show up, I can send messages to "root@xxxxxxxxxxxx" and "buster@xxxxxxxxxxxx", and they show up just fine.

I'm stumped. Can anyone give me some pointers or guesses? I hope I've provided sufficient information.

Check the mail header when the root mail comes through. Guess "arthur"
is then in the Received header tag chain.

No it isn't. It's all a bit confusing. I suspect that the problem is that the name records aren't correct, but I'm not sure exactly why it causes the problem. It appears that the message isn't just waiting around until "arthur" is on before it is correctly delivered, it looks like it isn't even sent until arthur is turned on. The logwatch ran at 4:00 am. I turned arthur on at 2:55 pm. As you can see (below), all of the dates are at 14:55. Here are the headers:

Return-Path: <root@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
