When  I test with "cdrecord dev=ATA" I get such an error message too. If
I do it proper with "cdrecord dev=/dev/hdc" then all is well. So I
suggest you put a valid entry in your /etc/cdrecord.conf file, like

CDR_DEVICE=LG
LG=        /dev/hdX        -1      -1      burnfree

where hdX fits your drive letter. You will only need to call cdrecord
with parameters if you want to override settings set by  the
cdrecord.conf.
