Fedora 3 (2.6.9.1.667smp) <- SMP kernel (for multi processor/HyperThreading machines)
Fedora 3-up (2.6.9-1.667) <- Single (uni) procesor kernel.

Perhaps you have a P4 with Hyperthreading. You could just stick to the
'uniproc' kernel - to keep things simple.
