Like Ed Wilts suggested,  doctor the fs tab and make the root partition ext2 
and boot smp.  Sounds like the journal is hosed.  

I did and got the same results and exact same errors attempting SMP kernel (Yep changed ext3 to ext2 in all three lines in fstab).  but boots fine in Single be it doctored as ext2 or set back to ext3.
