This turned out to be a media problem. I burnt the ISO to a DVD and mediacheck 
reported it good. Since I could not update I tried an install without 
reformat and it failed because of read errors. The DVD burn was not good but 
the mediacheck did not detect this. Using the DVD to HD install with the ISO 
worked. Go figure...
