Or better yet, just do this once and not worry about it again:

# modprobe nvidia
# cp -a /dev/nvidia* /etc/udev/devices
# chown root.root /etc/udev/devices/nvidia*

This solved the problem for my Compaq R3000Z laptop. Now even rhgb works fine and I don't have to modprobe the nvidia driver in any startup scripts.
