I was having problems with java on FC3 as well until I installed
xorg-x11-deprecated-libs. Everything worked fine after that.

You are correct. I should have at least tried it :-)
Running strace javaws, I get this continuously....
waitid(P_PID, 5742, 0xfeffe048, 0, NULL) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument)
Don't know if that helps...
