I think you mean you want to install third party graphics drivers, i.e.
for an NVidia card or an ATI one. Then simply run "init 3" as root to
leave the graphical mode. You don't need to fiddle with the inittab file
like the other posters said. If you have to start you PC new you can
directly get into non-X mode by pressing "a" at the grub boot screen and
adding a "3" to the end of the kernel parameter line (all without
quotes).
